Ian has a real issue with "losing" things. Homework, cell phones, video games, and sports equipment. The other night after not putting his helmet away all week, he noticed that the mouth guard was not longer there. In true preteen fashion, he did not spend much time trying to find it, and was less than respectful about looking for it.
After much yelling, and a small lecture on responsibility, I handed down the deal.
If he apologized to his coach for missing practice, he could earn the money doing house jobs to buy a new one. They cost about $10, so I am thinking that for the sake of keeping things simple, I will let him do 2 jobs worth $5.00. I chose the basement (which was a HUGE) mess, and his room, which was less overwhelming.
He took one look at the basement, and comes back up saying, " MOM! I am not doing the basement for $5.00! I tell him that he needs both jobs to equal the $10 he needs. He responds, "fine! but I want $8 for the basement, and $2 for my room!"
Okay then, I can live with that.... He really got me.
