Waiting at the table, I think they were confused, we NEVER use the dining room.
Ian learning to cook with/for DadFive years ago (in what was one of my favorite Thanksgivings ever) we began a tradition of drawing to see who makes what for the meal. At our house the categories are very generic Main dish (not necessarily Turkey), appetizer, veggie, potato, dessert, ect. The owner then has to plan, shop for, pay for, and prepare the item(s) of choice. It is designed to meet every budget and style. The only rule is that you cannot pay another attendee to make your dish, or do any of your work. Kevin has been patiently awaiting his year for main dish. He hates turkey. In fact until this tradition began he was pretty apathetic about Thanksgiving in general. This was his year. There was no turkey, no goose, no poultry of any kind. He decided that he wanted to serve king crab legs instead. They were yummy, and a big hit. I have to admit though they did make the final table look a little weird. He contracted a young apprentice to help him with his meal- I guess that's okay if the apprentice is too young to draw for his own category.
