Today has been one of those special days as a mom of 5. To set the stage, I should mention that Ian is home sick with bronchitis and an ear infection. It is the Halloween party day at the girls' school, and it is freezing cold, windy, and raining off and on.
The girls have beautiful satin Halloween costumes specially made by Grandma (thanks again). When choosing said costumes, I never considered potty breaks, and the need for petticoats to fit in a carseat. We had to get dressed in costume, baby fed, Ian medicated, and out the door at 8:45 to be to school on time. At 8:50 I still had no idea where my keys were, Ian couldn't find his movie for the van (this comes into play in a minute), and Hadley is screaming her head off. Jump ahead 10 frazzled minutes, we are loaded without the safety of the bottom two carseat buckles, Ian has compromised on the movie I can find, and Hadley has dozed off.
I had to leave Ian alone in the locked van in the parking lot at the church while I take the girls in and get them settled. He was armed with my cell phone, his movie playing, and instructions to lay on the horn if anyone approached the vehicle.
The girls were happy to be at school, but I was a nervous wreck picturing the colored juice, and cupcakes that were sure to be smeared on the beautiful satin dresses esp made by grandma. I didn't even know that the art activity of the day was PAINTING!!!! Yes, my daughters were left to paint pumpkins in their gorgeous frocks, as everyone knows, preschoolers are notoriously neat.
A few orange paint spots, no cupcakes, only a little sucker juice, later, I pick up my shoeless, sleeveless, headband free daughters and their 5 bags of treats, crafts, and papers. From there we head to Ian's school where he is too sick to attend, to drop off the picture money that he forgot to take yesterday. Oh yes, he had is picture taken in a crappy t-shirt that I would normally not even let him wear to school, but who am I kidding, I am just glad he is dressed these days.
We are now home for the day, girls out of their costumes, wearing only underwear, as is the outfit of choice. They are now ready to be dripping with red sauce from the spaghettio lunch I am planning to feed them, and it's off to bed when this mom thinks she might breakdown and drink one of those beers left on the top shelf of the fridge... Have to keep laughing to keep from crying. Have a great weekend. I think we will be spending ours close to home.
