Anyone missing your luggage?

It occurred to me that I finally have what I think is an interesting story to tell. Tuesday morning Ian looks out his window, and asks, "Mom why is there a suitcase in the front yard?"

I say, "what do you mean?"
Ian: "Right there under the big trees"
Mom: " I don't know, don't touch it until Dad checks it out."
(maybe I think Kevin is more of a bomb squad or something)
Mom: "Kevin, go see what that suitcase is."
Kevin: "What suitcase"
(repeat first 1/2 of conversation)

Kevin goes, and opens it. Clothes, i pod, papers, no identification. We determine that the suitcase had not been tossed, but placed there. After a little discussion we decide to call police. The sheriff comes to get the suitcase, and proceeds to give Kevin a little grief about the Arizona drivers license that he presents as ID. Sheriff takes the suitcase, and we think that was weird, but we did the right thing blah, blah, blah.

Wednesday afternoon doorbell rings.
Kid at the door (about 20 yrs old): "Hey I was wondering if you found a suitcase?"
Me:" Yes, we turned it over to the sheriff"
Kid: "What? The Who?, Oh" (It is apparently the weirdest thing in the world that we would not have stored the suitcase in our yard for him.)
Me: " They said they would try to find the owner, I am sure you can pick it up there"
Kid: Says nothing, turns gets in car and drives away.

Is it just me, or is it weird to leave your luggage in a stranger's front yard, and expect it to be right where you left it when you get back?

OK - that IS weird. Don't they remind you 6 million times in the airport "not to leave your luggage unattended"??? Maybe they should add, "when you leave the airport don't leave your luggage in anyone's yard" (?) What on earth was this person thinking???? Strange....
