I just read an article on my yahoo browser that evaluated the treats that are handed out for Halloween. The guy was kinda funny until he started bashing smarties......
Anyway it made me stop and think. What do other people do to choose what they give out for Halloween? Do you shop the sales? Try to get the big bags early with the most pieces? Do you go for your favorites-- and if so how do you keep the family out of them before Halloween? Do you run out the day of and see what is left to buy? Or are you one of those people who buy the treats that you (or your kids) hate to keep the family away from them until the big night?
I am a little bit of a combination. I buy some great treats early. Kevin and Ian always find them, and they get eaten way ahead of schedule after the girls go to bed at night. Then I buy a giant bag o'crap to make up my losses. On the day of Halloween Kevin usually assesses the bowl and decides a. there is not enough candy (and he is probably right) or b. That is not the good stuff, and he is not willing to wait to see what the kids get, and talk them out of it. Then he goes to the store and gets a bunch of PB cups and snickers.....
There are a few people in the neighborhood who were giving out the full-size bars last year. I thought they were crazy, until I did a little cost analysis. The big boxes of full size at Costco are not that much more than a big bag of small treats. Since you are not compelled to give out a handful of the big ones, you might come out ahead. HMMMMM something new to consider. I am not sure what I will do this year, but one thing is for sure, I have to hide it better if I don't buy it on the October 31st.

i have about 350 plus kids stopping by the house so i usually go for the big bag o'crap and the another bag of good stuff that i don't mind if i have left overs on.....that is the bag that is handed out last.
AHHH-- strategy I love it!
Because we live in such a remote neighborhood, we actually do not have trick or treater AND to top it off, we go to the good neighborhood a couple of miles down the road where the houses are close together and the candy is a plenty. Although, considering the amount of $$ we pay our dentist, maybe it is time to rethink that strategy. :-)
Back in the day, we used to buy a combo of Crap and the Goodstuff, but the goodstuff never made it to Halloween night.
