You know how it feels when you are happy, and in a great situation with your friends all around laughing, people who get the inside jokes? You know that surge of adrenaline that you have when someone bugs you, but you have your buddies there to back you? I was watching my girls today, and I realized for just a split second what it must feel like to be a triplet.
First, I dropped Jilly at a birthday party with her classmates. She seemed so small and meek. Her spirit shrank walking into the party alone. Not that she did not want to go, it's all she has talked about for a week. She just realized that as we were going in, she was on her own. "are you staying, Mommy?" it was a whisper....
Not a chance toots, I had to buy goggles and pick up the other two in time to come back for her in time for swim lessons. Bravely, she said her goodbye, and went in to sit with friends instead of her sisters. If Ella/Holly had been there she would have been in the prep room cutting up, barely casting a glance back my way upon arrival. It was a different Jilly, stripped of a little courage.
Later the three of them went to swim lessons. A new teacher, new pool, they have not been in the water in months. All three laughing, and trying to outdo the others at silliness in the lockeroom. Their teacher got to hear three versions of every story, and they could not wait to be first to show her what they knew how to do. It was hilarious to see them together. There is no fear. There is not a moment of hesitation. After all, how bad can it be with your two best friends beside you?
I don't want it to sound like they only function together. They are capable little girls with good social skills. It is just amazing to see just how confident they are when they are running as a pack.
